In this respect it is also important to credit Wang’s chemistry with Cooke as an accompanist. Each of the composers Cooke had selected for her program had his own distinctive set of approaches to harmony and texture as applied to setting context for thevocal line. (Crumb’s approach was particularly distinctive, since it was a youthful style thathe would subsequently abandon.) Thus, through her accompaniment, Wang had to establish her own “presentation of self” through which Cooke’s presentation would emerge clearly and compellingly. This was the sort of relationship between vocalist and accompanist that every aficionado of the art song repertoire seeks. --The Examiner
But there was novelty in the amazing debut of Cooke's accompanist, Pei-Yao Wang, an exceptional pianist, who brought to mind Yuja Wang, not only because of the name. (Yes, I know the name "Wang" is very much like "Smith," but there is something similar in their artistry.)
At the very beginning, with just a few introductory notes to Wolf's "Gebet," Wang made the listener sit up and pay attention — remaining enthralled for the next two hours. Every touch and release was exactly right, she "speaks" the music, the notes are full of depth and meaning, the piano a full and equal partner to the singer.

Pei-Yao Wang, who painted with a range of color from symbolist grays and pastels in the Debussy Chansons de Bilitis to full orchestral technicolor in the concluding Rachmaninoff song.

The only drawback to the strikingly effective quartet arrangements wasthat they deprived us of the opportunity to hear more from pianist Pei-Yao Wang, who accompanied Phan and later shone in the evening's dazzlingfinale, Mendelssohn's D Major Sextet, with the Orion String Quartet and bassist Curtis Daily. Wang is a first-rate chamber musician with acute sensitivity, quietly bristling energy and a crystal-clear touch, and she's specifically a superb song accompanist, making magic alongside a singerwhile calling no undue attention to herself.

Pianist Pei-Yao Wang is an amazing talent. Her attention to every detail and her own interpretive skill enhanced the program. She plays with a nuanced and highly attunedapproach to her partner. I hope to have the pleasure of hearing her in solo recital someday.
